“Day Next” as we like to call it, is the code name for the integration of adobe.com and macromedia.com, and if you take a look at either of those url’s you’ll notice that this massive task is well underway. You may notice that not all pages are available in the updated template, but the goal of Day Next was to integrate the top level pages and house everything under the one domain.

The Developer Center (aka devnet) on the other hand has taken a rather large hit with the integration, bringing with it a more unified approach to finding product knowledge, articles, samples etc. You’ll find some interesting information about the re-design and where to find some of your common pages in this article, “Day Next” comes to the Developer Center.

I bet the title got your attention

I’m not really stirring things up but I thought I would announce my new position with Macromedia. On the 3rd of October I started as Senior Product Support Engineer for Macromedia Asia Pacific. I will be providing product support for Flex and Flash Communication Server throughout the Asia Pacific region.

This should be a great opportunity and I’m really looking forward to helping many of the Flex users out there to create exciting internet experiences

Macromedia Labs is LIVE!

Well Flex 2.0 is a step closer with the launch of Macromedia Labs. The new Labs site aims to provide developers with an insight into new Macromedia technologies and inovations.

The official launch will be Monday 17th at MAX 2005 in Anaheim California, but the Macromedia web team have been busy preparing for the masses. Be sure to grab your copy of Flex Builder 2 and have a play! Get to know and understand the new features in Flex, enhancements to the IDE, changes with Actionscript 3 and so on.

I’m sure by now many of you may have heard or read about this, but nonetheless – here goes …

This morning Macromedia and Adobe announced their merger plans, however this has not occurred yet as there are formal processes that are still yet to be met/completed.

Macromedia and Adobe have put up a site with some further information and there is more information available in a Macromedia press release.

Mike Chambers has posted a Macromedian’s view on the merger at his blog.

This is definitely some interesting news! BIG news!

Flex pricing strategy

Over the past few weeks there has been a lot of speculation as to what the new Flex pricing and licencing structure may look like. To clear up some of the confusion Lucian Beebe, Flex Product Manager, has posted a response on flexcoders regarding the changes.

These changes, to take affect on the first of April, aim to focus on the variety of market segments that are currently growing and showing interest in RIA’s and Flex, yet the new pricing model seems only to cater for the larger scale business.

Flex library assets – cursors

A month ago I posted a question to flexcoders regarding cursors not showing in sub-applications loaded using the Loader control (mx:Loader). The solution was to embed the required assets into the root application.

Following this I needed to find out what cursors were available in the mx.skins.cursor package. But as Manish explains, this is not a package, yet a naming convention for symbols in the flex Library.swf

Resizable, Minimizable/Maximizable TitleWindow

The TitleWindow component does not support resizing and collapsing the window, at least not until recently. Following on from Manish’s ‘Resizable Title Window’, Jesse’s ‘Collapsable Panel’, and Christophe’s ‘Draggable, Minimizable/Maximizable, Configurable Panel’, I felt the need to combine all such functionality into a single class.

The outcome of this was a Resizable, Minimizable/Maximizable TitleWindow. The component is work in progress, and could be approched in a much neater fashion, so consider it a stepping stone if you’re feeling adventurous!

On the roadmap:

Set the minimum height and width of the window for resizing. Currently the buttons and window title overlap. You can also resize the window less than the header height (whoops)
Modify the backgroundImage’s properties (offsets) to display a ‘wedge’ image in the bottom right hand corner. This will help show that the window can be resized.
Make the resize capabilty a modifiable property.
Combine all image assets into one swf/fla file.
